Akashinga Rangers:
Selecting the Next Squad of
All-Female Anti-Poaching
Rangers

In 2023, 25 women were selected out of a group of 75 to become Mozambique’s next squad of anti-poaching rangers; but not before being put through some of the most grueling physical and mental challenges imaginable.

Sleep deprivation, walking 10km while carrying 15kg bags of sand on their heads, endless drills in the scorching heat, barefoot 8km runs in the bush - and more, again, and again, and again. All of this to test their strength - but mostly, mental resilience - to take on a job protecting what vulnerable wildlife is left.
